All of the options you mentioned are not practical and may be
in violation of FCC rules.
In my opinion, you would still be better off with a celluar phone.
Some of the cell phone companies offer a service that will forward
your call to the cellphone if you do not answer you home phone and
also forward your cellphone to your home if you do not answer it
after a predetermined amount of rings.
I have a Tropez 900Mhz cordless phone and it's range is about 1/2 mile
for a full quieting noise free signal. It's by far the best of the
units I have checked out and it includes digital encryption.

ARLB076 New ITU Radiocommunication Director
At the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Kyoto, Japan, on September
30, the International Telecommunication Union elected Canadian radio
amateur Robert W. Jones, VE3CTM, to replace retiring Richard C.
Kirby, W0LCT, as Director of its Radiocommunication Bureau.
Jones, 50, of Ottawa, is currently the Director General of the Radio
Regulatory Branch, under Industry and Science Canada, which regulates
amateur and other radio services. His work with the ITU began in 1975
in preparation for the 1977 and 1979 World Administrative Radio
Conferences. From 1981 to 1983 he was director of a project to
automate ITU frequency records. He has since served and headed
Canadian delegations to numerous ITU conferences and working groups.
He holds Master of Applied Science and Master of Business
Administration degrees, and attributes his professional interest
in radiocommunication to having become a licensed radio amateur
as a teenager in 1959.

Average solar flux was up by only a few points last week.
Geomagnetic indices have also risen a bit, signaling some
instability. Very low levels of solar activity should continue,
with a recurring coronal hole causing active geomagnetic conditions
around October 4 or 5. Solar flux should rise to about 85 after the
first of the month, and then drop back to around 70 by October 17.
Sunspot Numbers for September 22 through 28 were 15, 17, 20, 35, 43,
36 and 35, with a mean of 28.7. 10.7 cm flux was 70.7, 71.4, 72.8,
76.2, 77, 74.7 and 74, with a mean of 73.8.
The path projection for this week is from Togo (5V) and Norfolk,
Virginia.
80 meters looks good from 2230 to 0600z, peaking around 0030 to
0500. 40 meters should be open from 2130 to 0700, and 30 meters
from 2030 to 0400, with 30 meters open as late as 0700 on many days.
20 meters should be open from 1700 to 0000, peaking toward the end
of the period. Check 17 meters from 1330 to 2200, and 15 meters
from 1500 to 2000. 12 meters may be open on some days from 1530 to
2000. 10 meters does not look promising, but on rare occasions it
may be open some time between 1500 and 2100.

Folks, if you are tired of the same old drill on HF SSB and you are

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------
Solar activity was very low. Three weak optically
uncorrelated B-class events were reported this period. The
largest of these was a B4 occurring at 29/0132UT. Region 7782
rotated around the limb. No other significant changes noted.
Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
very low.
STD: Yohkoh x-ray imagery indicates another active region is
approaching the east limb. It does not appear to be very
large.
The geomagnetic field has been at quiet to unsettled
levels for the past 24 hours. The greater than 2 MeV energetic
electron flux has been mostly moderate for the past 24 hours.
Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
expected to be quiet to unsettled for the next three days.

True, but all the call signs aren't really used up. A _lot_ of them have
long since expired, yet the FCC isn't recycling them. Not sure why, though.

I've used an FT-5200 in my Jeep for over a year and LOVE it! Its small size and detachable front panel
make it a real winner. The 14 memories per band are more than adequate for my application.
I've also used the radio on packet where it performed flawlessly. With its "extended" recieve coverage
it also doubles as a scanner, eliminating the need for another radio in the mobile. With the search/scan
controls on the DTMF mike, use while mobile quickly becomes second nature. The "crossband repeat"
is also a nice feature. The instruction book is quite complete, and includes all schematics.
Hope this helps in your decission.

Could this be a way to put the individuals responsibility to follow the
rules on someone else? I don't think this would be such a hot OR effect
idea. I do see your point that making a customer READ the manual will
increase the odds that they will read they must have a license before
transmitting. This will in no way stop the person who is intent on
transmitting illegally, only slow him down a minute or two. It WOULD make
the employees at RS very irritated at the customers who would (no doubt!)
be returning their "defective" radios!
This reminds me of a couple of funny posts on USENET by amateur(s) waiting
for their license to arrive. It seems they have the radios all ready to go
but have decided that they can't trust themselves enough not to transmit, so
they have enabled the TX Stop. Ha! Go figure... again...

Yes, because the starting of the engine of a car is more comparable to
turning the HT on. The actual transmitting with the HT and "kerchunking"
a repeater is analogous to "driving" the car. Of course, no license,
not legal.
My question, however, is why would Radio Shack be the responsible party?
Isn't the person who makes the actual transmission the responsible party?
Maybe this is another example of those in our society not wanting to take
responsibility for themselves...
